Somerset Wedding: E&T

Real Wedding by Kate

Afternoon all!

It's a gloomy Monday after a glorious weekend. To make matters all the worse, it's a Monday after a wedding. I'm not a big fan of these. There's a bittersweet sense of loss & sadness that the day we've been waiting for has whizzed by & my clients don't need me anymore. It's completely daft, they've had the most wonderful-extraordinary-tremendous day & here I am sat in a strop because I miss my client-friends. So as I'm a soppy bugger, let's reminisce on the lovely Elizabeth & Timothy & their wedding in the glorious Mendip Hills of Somerset!

No matter how many Instagram posts I do, I always find the best way of people hearing about The Destination Wedding Co is classic word of mouth. Tim, our handsome groom, worked in the same co-working space as a brilliant friend of mine Helen (And Stevo too, but you'll hear lot about him anyway). Helen is the sweetest pocketful of sunshine & she doesn't quite know how much of a gal-crush I had on her - I instantly wanted her as my mate. Anyway, Elizabeth & Tim, the veracious, business-bossing, intelligent extraordinair's that got to the 6 month marker before their wedding & went into mild panic. So much left to do, so little of their time available. We were introduced & hey presto they got themselves a wedding planner!

Liz & I got had our first sit down over a cuppa to talk about her & Tim. A stand up genuine Essex gent & our West County version of Kate Middleton have been together for over 10 years… their first dance choice of 'At Last' by Etta James says it all! We then got to the task at hand by mapping out where they'd got to & what was left to do for their wedding day. The bare bones of their wedding day were there; the date, ceremony location, reception venue & photographer (The brilliant John Barwood - more on them later). The brief; a traditional English summer wedding, the rolling Mendip hills of Somerset, quaint village church & a country house nestled in beautiful gardens.

I got straight to work on putting together a few look-boards to get a feeling of style & feel they wished for & started the hunt for the super duper suppliers to produce all of the best details. Now these two lovelies aren't cooky crazy; simple elegance, clean lines & classic touches were the name of the game. A brilliant challenge for me!

We got some seriously stupendous suppliers involved; Alexandra Sylvester Flowers, The Sunflower Bakery & Bristol Bridal hair & make up. The common thread of these wondrous independents is that they are brilliant at what they do & they could not be more thrilled to be part of Liz & Tim’s wedding. This really shone throughout the planning & on the day itself; I’m a big believer that if you’ve got trusted & relaxed people around you on your wedding day then this will calm any couples nerves.

I checked in with the John Barwood Photography a few weeks before & found the most cheery, bubbly & feminine voice on the other end; it was Soph Barwood, the other half of team JB & what a pleasure it was to talk through the flow of the day. I can’t wait to work together again in the not too distant future!

Since first writing the post, I've received an eye-welling review from Liz & Tim, so sweet of them! It's been such a pleasure to be part of their celebrations...

“Six months before our wedding day, we realised that with mounting professional commitments we needed some wedding planning help and asked Kate if she could lend a hand.  This was one of the best decisions we made!  From beginning to end, Kate has been literally amazing, not just practically; offering ideas and advice down the smallest of detail, but also emotionally, and right up to the last minute - such as when our printers failed to deliver our order of service on time and Kate helped us source new suppliers and designers in record time!  Oh, and Kate managed to do all of this for a wedding in Somerset, despite being based up north!  Overall, Kate’s help has been invaluable and we are so grateful for all her support - she has been instrumental in making our wedding the best day of our lives.  Please, if you are considering a wedding planner, give Kate a call, you will not be disappointed, she is an absolute professional and knows her weddings inside and out!  Best wishes, Tim & Liz (Somerset)".

John & Soph have been kind enough to share their photos of the day, so without further ado…

5 Lakeside Wedding Destinations you need to see!

Inspiration by Kate

The swish of your wedding dress catching the wind, mimicking the soft waves beyond.

Lakeside destination weddings are an absolute favourite of mine. Now in this post you're getting two for the price of one  inspirations for glorious lake locations... the obvious choice & then an unconventional alternative!

5. Orta over Como, Italy

I couldn't very well do a blog piece on Lakeside weddings without a mention of the Italian Lakes… Como, Garda, without a doubt serene & picturesque locations. And just like their infamous resident George Clooney, I wouldn't kick them out of bed. But I have a little gem up my sleeve when it comes to Lakeside views in this neck of the woods. The lesser known & smaller Lake Orto has plenty - if not more - to offer.

There are ceremony opportunities on the lake island, Isola San Giulio, with stunning frescos in the church or The Sanctuary sitting atop a cliff edge with phenomenal views across the landscape.

It's no surprise the Italians in the region have dubbed the lake La Cenerentola (Cinderella) the ethereal, secret & arguably more beautiful compared to it's larger siblings Como & Garda.

4. The Lost Lake over Lake Tahoe, North America

The combination of glacial mountains & dense woodland, in a more intimate location sets the Lost Lake beyond it's bigger cousins in West America.

Think reading your vows with your toes in the shore of the lake, thermos filled with hot chocolate & marshmallows round a campfire - or 's'mores' if we're really going cross-continental. The Lost Lake is for the true wild at heart, with little to no amenities. This would suit elopements or at the very least with like-minded friends & family who are sleeping beneath the stars!

3. Loch Maree over Loch Lomand, Scotland

Loch Maree in Wester Ross (Any Game of Throne fans see any link here?), Scotland steeped in Celtic history. A harsh, but equally beautiful silver scenery has been noted as bewitching to many of its visitors.

A custom on the lake is to locate the money tree on the lakes island & slot into the trunk to bring good luck & financial freedom in your marriage. The oldest coin in the tree backdates to 1828. With a few choice locations for a wedding reception, this is made up by the inspiring lake side coves & holy sites to exchange vows.

2. The Blue Lakes (Lake Tarawera) over Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand

The most exotic of the bunch; white sandy beaches and as the name suggests the clearest of blue waters. Lake Tarawera is one of the 4 lakes surrounding the its namesake volcano on the North Island.

As you can imagine from the New Zealanders, relaxed weddings are the name of the game. Whether this in a barn, garden, lodge or wine cellar, there are plenty of styles to choose from around the lakeside.

1. Bohinj over Bled, Slovenia

Now to those that know me, this is a shocker! Stevo & I got married in Lake Bled a few years ago & for me to announce any other Lake above this one is unheard of... however, I did promise an unconventional alternative destination & here you have it - Lake Bohinj!

Just under 30km away from the serenity of Bled, Bohinj offers you thrill seekers the ideal location. Bouldering spots, gorj walking, an abundance of water sports, the lot! Plenty of activities for your guests to enjoy. The Savica Waterfall is the perfect lunch spot on one of the many hikes in the surrounding Triglav National Park.

Swap the boat to the Island church on Bled for a stroll across the Bohinj bridge to Cerkev Sv. Janeza Krstnika (John the Baptist). Witness some of Slovenia's oldest frescos & intricate masonry.

A wave of guilt has prompted a dedicated post on Lake Bled... one to come in the future, I promise!
